We awarded this facility an A for our short-term care rating. This score is much more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. Our short-term care scores are meaningful for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This facility is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. It offered roughly one and a half times as many registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. This is what we look for when assessing a facility in this category. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in New Jersey in this area with 64.4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. It received one of our best scores in that category with an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. While this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Our nursing grade consists of many factors, however, the paramount consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provides a very impressive 4.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. Lastly, our nursing grade also includes some relevant quality measures. Even though this nursing home excelled in terms of quantity of nursing care, it lagged behind in certain subcategories that emphasized quality. This facility's nursing score was hurt by its weak data related to minimizing pressure ulcers.

Historical

The final category we graded is long-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is a rock bottom score. This is obviously a major disappointment. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. Based on its grade in this category, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that this nursing home received good marks in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This figure is actually higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this nursing home also keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
