While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid places with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

This nursing home's next most respectable score was short-term care, but even there it earned a grade of just D in that category. This still happens to be a well below average score. Our short-term care grade is often used to score a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to have quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 5.6 percent of its residents returning home. This was quite a bit below the national average.

Unfortunately, this facility's next highest category was long-term care. However, with a D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. Facilities that don't score well in long-term care often don't provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in some of the areas of routine medical care we assessed. One of the datapoints we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to just 87.87879 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home actually fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best feature in this category.

Turning to our last category, this facility really did not fare very well in this area either. With an abysmal grade of F in nursing, this is just about as as uninspiring as it gets. There are numerous subcategories included in this area. Most of these criteria relate to the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these metrics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
