Facility Inspections
This nursing home's best category grade came in the area of government inspections. In this area, we gave this nursing home a grade of B. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Inspection grades weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received an impressive short-term care score. Indeed, we gave them a B in this category, which is one of our better. Our short-term care grade is often used to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this nursing home a grade of B in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our higher grades. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. After assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
The next category we scored is nursing. This facility received a B- in this area. The nursing rating is based on many data points, many of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing scores also factor in some quality-focused metrics. We look at the percentage of residents who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. These statistics are measures of the quality of nursing care, since superior care can reduce these problems.
