While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. This facility received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to patient safety or health. Finally, CMS cited this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. Hopefully, its performance improves in the future, but until then we simply can't recommend this facility.

We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Nursing scores are largely based on the facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, this nursing home was relatively weak in some of the major metrics we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its patients' pressure ulcers and major falls.

We were also surprised to learn that this nursing home received a somewhat respectable short-term care grade this year. We gave it a C in that category. In forming these short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 43.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Long-term Care Quality

The next area we analyzed was long-term care. It received a lowly F for this category, which is a very poor grade. Nursing homes that don't fare well in this category typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine personal care we looked at. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 92.810455 percent of its residents. This is slightly below what we anticipated but still a respectable figure. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was also a cause for concern. Here we found that this facility had 2.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an alarming rate.
