In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this place also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This facility was hit with 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

This nursing home also received a strong grade in our nursing category. We awarded this nursing home an above average grade of B+ in this area. Our nursing score is mostly based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of turning patients even once per day.

In addition, we awarded this nursing home a B+ in our short-term care category. This happens to be one of our higher grades. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is considered to be a fair assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents that returned home from this nursing home. This place fared as well as just about any facility with 57.9 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

The final area we scored was long-term care, which ended up being this facility's worst area. We gave this nursing home a D in this category. Naturally, this score pulled down the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. For patients in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 99.35691 percent of its residents against pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. While it had 2.22 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not bad since it had some more complex patients.
