In addition to earning a strong overall score, this facility performed well in our short-term care category. We awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our best scores. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Nursing ratings are largely based on a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Michigan in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of turning patients at least once a day.

Additionally, this facility also received favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. In fact, we awarded it one of our higher scores in that area, with a grade of B. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. After we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

In the last category of inspections, we gave this nursing home a grade of C for this category. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially look at the severity of the deficiencies. This place had 7 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but fortunately none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.
