Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave it an A-. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an impressive score in our long-term care category. We gave this nursing home a better than average grade of B+ in this area. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 89.949745 percent of its patients. This is a bit lower than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we had hoped, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.16 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. There are quite a few subcategories included in this area. Most of the criteria relate to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home fared well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's worst category was short-term care, which is the final area we analyzed. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this category. Even with a few acceptable grades in other categories, this grade is nevertheless alarming so we would like to to make a note of it. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This category is often a fair assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. It looks like this place was below average in multiple staffing areas we assessed. The facility offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 27.1 percent of its patients returning home.
