While we didn't give this nursing home a good overall score, we actually gave it a relatively strong grade in the area of inspections, where it earned a B+. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid nursing homes with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

This nursing home's short-term care rating is one of its best grades. The nursing home was given a grade of B- in this category. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we size up the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is often a useful measure of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, this place was below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 5.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. This figure was below average.

We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of C. Our nursing grade is primarily based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In fact, it performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.

The final category we looked at is long-term care. This facility received an abysmal grade of F in this area. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours is vaccinations. Fortunately, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.20635 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
