Although we didn't grade this nursing home favorably overall, we did give it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it received an A. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid places that have too many deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report, which is still very impressive. Overall, this was a generally positive inspection report.

We also awarded this nursing home a middle of the pack score in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a C. For residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. Thankfully, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Moving on to the category of short-term care, this nursing home was awarded a grade of just D in this area. In the category of short-term care, we try to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Based on its poor grade in this category, we were not stunned to discover that this nursing home provides significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.

The last area we looked at is nursing. This nursing home was given a bottom of the barrel grade of F in this area. The nursing score assesses several data points, many of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. With a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this facility's nurse staffing levels were quite a bit below average. On top of being below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at about 150 percent of the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These scores helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
