One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection score. Inspections is its best category grade. In this category, we gave this facility an A-. Our inspection grades are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home truly excelled in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed more favorably in this area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Turning to the next area, this nursing home also received a grade of B for its short-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this area. Our short-term care scores are likely more critical for people in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this nursing home submitted data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.4 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home was given a respectable nursing score. Although this wasn't as strong as a few of its other category grades, this is still a middle of the pack score. Nursing scores are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, we like to look at quality-based metrics, such as the percentage of residents who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. These data points are measures of the quality of nursing care.
