Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this facility an A+ for our inspections rating. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to its high-end performance in other areas, we gave this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care rating. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary deaths for the elderly population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
Building on its high-end assessment, this nursing home also was awarded an excellent short-term care score, with a grade of A-. In computing these short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that 5.7 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The last category we looked at is nursing, in which this facility was given a B-. While this turned out to be its least impressive category grade, this is still not a terrible score. Nursing scores are tied to nurse staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it did very well in this area. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents more often.
