Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

While we gave this nursing home a bad overall score, we gave it a somewhat respectable grade in the category of inspections, where we gave it a grade of B-. This was better than its other category grades. Inspection ratings are tied to many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key item to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to resident safety. This particular nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. In addition to having severe deficiencies, this nursing home was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. This is generally a really bad sign. We would never recommend this facility.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also ended up giving this facility a fairly respectable grade in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B-. In computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are caring for residents and the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home provides only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a somewhat alarming figure as it is well below the national average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got docked a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this subcategory. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning residents even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third best area turned out to be short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a B-. In computing these short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. We found that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next category we graded is long-term care, which turned out to be a weak link for this facility. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in long-term care. For prospective patients looking for a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 95.652176 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
