Registered Staff Hours
While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with a bunch of severe deficiencies flagged. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. In spite of this deficiency, this place still received a relatively positive report.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's next most favorable area was its long-term care grade, where it was given a C. For patients in need of a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. One of the factors we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this nursing home only earned a grade of D for its short-term care score, which is not one of our better scores. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Given its weak rating in this category, we were not surprised to learn this nursing home provided significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients that returned home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
The final category we assessed was nursing. This nursing home received a poor grade of F in this area. When determining a nursing home's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses commit to residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is an alarmingly low total. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these statistics to be measures of the quality of nursing care.
