Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A+ for that area, which is one of our best scores. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid places with a list of deficiencies flagged. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
The second best area we awarded this facility in any category came in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a C. In determining these short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, this place was below average in terms of its level of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. The last metric we considered in this area is the number of residents who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 5.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. This figure was below the national average.

Long-term Care Quality
We awarded this nursing home just a D for our long-term care rating. This is well below average in this category. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
The final area we scored was nursing. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is a rock bottom score. When determining our nursing scores, we analyze both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This place fared well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care.
