Facility Inspections
We want to point out that this facility really outperformed its overall score in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest grades in that area with an A. Our inspection scores are tied to many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ in that area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Facilities that receive this kind of score in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. The last statistic we assessed is its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.75 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing rating. We gave this facility an D. Our nursing rating analyzes the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of licensure of those nurses as well as the amount of time spent with residents. In this facility's case, quantity of care does not appear to be the problem. According to its staffing data, this nursing home provided an average of 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which was above the national average. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home did not fare as well in the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home was above the national average in both statistics.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our next category, this facility didn't fare very well. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in short-term care, this is its worst grade. Short-term care ratings are important for patients in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional highly-skilled nursing services. This means a vast spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. With a grade this poor in this area, we weren't stunned to find this facility was below average in the two key staffing figures we assess. In fact, it supplied significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. The final item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 27.9 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
