Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that have a long list of deficiencies. This facility received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second most respectable category is short-term care, but it nevertheless received just a D in that category. This ended up being a well below average score. Our short-term care ratings are likely more important for those in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Given its score in this category, we were not stunned to find that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse hours offered to its residents. Frankly, this was about what we expected here. The final statistic we looked at in this category is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area, with just 39.8 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the category of long-term care, this nursing home was given just a D in this area. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. While it had 1.77 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not bad since it had more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
The last category we analyzed was nursing, where this facility was given a poor score in this category as well. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area, which is definitely a major disappointment. Our nursing rating focuses on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home averaged a meager 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is not a very impressive figure. This place also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this area.
