While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

This facility really excelled in the area of nursing, where it earned an B-. Few facilities fared better in this category. Our nursing score is mostly based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually excelled in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

This facility's second worse score is long-term care, where it received just a D in that category. This is a relatively poor score. Long-term care ratings in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. Frankly, we were a bit alarmed this facility vaccinated 86.98011 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be several points below what we expected. Surprisingly, this place was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.

The next area we looked at was short-term care. Sadly, it received a lowly F for this area, which is a very poor score. In calculating our short-term care grades, we scrutinize a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is considered to be a reliable assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. As you might expect, we found that this facility offers substantially less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than a typical facility. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.8 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this facility's short-term care score.
