Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also stunned to find that this nursing home earned a reasonably solid short-term care score this year. We awarded it a grade of C in this area. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. We found that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we assessed. It offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of patients who returned home from the facility. This facility performed better in this statistic. It fared better than most facilities in this area with 50.2 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this place performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is generally an indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed is long-term care. This facility received a poor grade of F in this category. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home gave the vaccine to 97.93104 percent of its patients, which is a very solid figure. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 2.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic wasn't bad due to it having some more complicated patients.
