Long-term Care Quality
This place performed well in long-term care. We awarded it an A- for that area. This salvaged its overall profile. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 79.52219 percent of its residents against pneumonia. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Despite having 1.87 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complex patients.
Facility Inspections
We also wanted to emphasize this place's nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of B+ in this category. Inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Our nursing rating is based on a handful of components, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, nursing scores also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours per resident, this facility performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is often a reliable indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses to assist its patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our last category, this nursing home didn't fare very well. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this was its poorest grade. Our short-term care grade is typically used to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To have quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 36.1 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
