Short-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled at short-term care. We gave them an A+ in this category. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is more often than not a reliable assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Massachusetts in this area with 65.1 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also earned an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the few facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This score is based on the facility's recent inspections. An A+ in this area is one of the best complements we can pay to a facility. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
This first-rate facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A+. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our nursing score is based on numerous datapoints. The most heavily weighted one is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This nursing home provided 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by these figures. On top of providing high levels of care, this facility was also above average in several of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we assessed was long-term care. This incredible nursing home also excelled in this category, where we awarded it an A+. This completed a spectacular report card of four A+'s. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. One of the criteria we considered in addition to this facility's quality nursing hours is vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.4 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for seniors. This combination proved to be effective as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.48 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
