Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave it a grade of A. Inspection grades are based on many items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a strong grade in short-term care. This nursing home earned a grade of B+ in this category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Short-term care grades are typically employed to gauge a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in this area with 58 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care, where this facility received a B- in this area. In our long-term care category, we weigh the volume of services provided by a nursing home, along with a few qualitative statistics. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is an above average total. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.11 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we scored was nursing. For that category, we awarded this nursing home a C. When determining a nursing home's nursing rating, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home provides 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Finally, our nursing ratings also factor in some quality-focused metrics. We like to look at the percentage of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these statistics are indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care can reduce these problems.
