Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a great nursing home overall, it also earned A+ inspections in recent years. Its inspections are nearly perfect. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This facility was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also want to point out the fact that this nursing home received a top-shelf score of A in our long-term care category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to offering very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.61 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. Our nursing rating focuses on the facility's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 5.6 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by both of these figures. On top of offering high levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With below five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

In the last category we graded, this nursing home received a very favorable grade of A in our short-term care category. With this grade, the nursing home finished off a straight A profile. Our short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a wide spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 61.8 percent of its patients returning home.
