Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

The main reason this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an elite nursing grade. In fact, we gave this facility a grade of A-. When calculating a facility's nursing rating, we consider the number of hours nurses are seeing patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

An additional strength of this facility is its top-shelf score in short-term care. We gave it one of our better grades in that category, with a grade of A-. Short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

We also found that this nursing home has received favorable inspections in recent years. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is better than many facilities in this category. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next area we analyzed was long-term care, which proved to be this facility's worst category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this category. Naturally, this grade hurt the facility's overall grade a bit. For residents looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is more than the average nursing home. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
