Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. Its inspection grade was far better than its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area tend to have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of long-term care, with high-end score of A- in this area. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 2.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received its third most favorable category score in the area of short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this category, which is an acceptable score. Short-term care ratings are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we considered the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was actually below the national average.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed is nursing, which turned out to be this facility's worst area. We gave it an F for this category, which is obviously concerning. Our nursing rating includes a handful of subcategories, many of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This place offered a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is quite a bit below average. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
