Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is it received an impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections ended up being its best category. In this area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

To complement its elite achievements in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a score of A for its short-term care grade. In determining our short-term care ratings, we size up the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This grade is considered to be a useful measure of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. In computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This facility provided 0.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Florida in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Moving on to our last area, this facility received a very strong long-term care rating. Even though this isn't as impressive as several of its other scores, this is nevertheless one of our more favorable grades a facility can receive. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
