Facility Inspections
The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better scores in that category, with an A. This is a notably better score than the place's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. Inspection scores are based on datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Another strength of this facility is its impressive score in short-term care. We gave it one of our better scores in that area, with a score of A-. Our short-term care scores are arguably most important for patients requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This place provides more services with registered nurses and physical therapists than most facilities we looked at. The final item we assessed in this category is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Illinois in this area with 63.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. In fact, we gave this facility an D. When calculating our nursing ratings, we look at both staffing levels and the skill levels of those nurses. According to CMS records, this place averaged 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This was actually above the national average. Keep in mind, however, that when we compute our nursing scores, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade substantially.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we scored is long-term care, which is this facility's weakest area. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F in this category, which is clearly a major disappointment. When facilities receive this type of grade in long-term care it is often a bad sign for resident care and it may mean that the place is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. After we finished looking at the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 92.82051 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Surprisingly, this nursing home was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 3 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score wasn't bad due to it having some more complex patients.
