Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is it earned an A+ inspection grade. This is just about as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection grades are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to its strong profile, this nursing home also performed well in our long-term care area. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in the category. Facilities that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 99.75903 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a dangerous condition for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.17 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Compounding its fine resume, this facility also was given a superb short-term care score, with a grade of A-. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to measure a nursing home's rehabilitation services To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature better levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Massachusetts in this area with 62.3 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
In our final category, we gave this facility a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. This finished off a first-rate profile. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the quantity of hours nurses are with residents and the level of licensure of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 4 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which was above the national average. Lastly, this facility was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.
