Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Even though we graded this facility extremely poorly overall, it actually earned a solid long-term care score this year. We gave it a B in this category. For prospective patients seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 78.19549 percent of its patients, which is a bit less than we were hoping for. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that category, we awarded this facility an C. Our nursing rating is primarily based on a facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a low total compared with most other facilities. Finally, nursing ratings also consider quality-based assessments, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is often an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.

Facility Inspections

Grade: F

This facility received an F for its inspection grade. This is a particularly important category. Grades in this range usually point to red flags on the facility's government inspection reports. For facilities with bad inspection scores, you should really focus on any severe deficiencies found on their inspection reports. This facility was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only favorable thing we can say is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that indicate they posed a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, we also need to point out that this facility received large government fines recently in excess of $50,000. This generally means that inspectors became fed up after several years of failed inspections.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Turning to the final area, this facility really didn't fare very well in this area either. Due to an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is really as bad as it gets. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. With a score this poor for this category, we weren't shocked to learn this nursing home was well below average in two of the key staffing areas we assess. The nursing home supplied significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics sunk this facility's short-term care score.
