Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively insignificant. While this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We would not recommend this facility under any circumstance.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. In fact, nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. There are numerous factors within this area. Most of the datapoints are tied to nurse staffing. This place provided only 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. To go along with its below average total nursing hours per resident, this facility had really poor marks in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents sustaining falls leading to serious injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is alarming in light of the fact that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of receiving a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this facility just a D for our short-term care grade. This is well below average in this category. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to create a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Based on its grade in this category, we were not surprised to discover that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the metrics we looked at. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 32.5 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we looked at was long-term care. This facility received an abysmal grade of F in this category. If you are looking for services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.297295 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 2.35 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score wasn't bad due to it having more complicated patients.
