Facility Inspections

Grade: A

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A few relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Among its many high-end scores, this facility was awarded an excellent short-term care score. In fact, we gave it a score of A- in this area. In determining our short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to formulate a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Turning to our third area, this facility also earned a score of B for its long-term care rating. This is a well above average grade in this category. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is far higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

The final area we scored is nursing, in which this nursing home was awarded a B. Although this turned out to be its weakest category rating, this is still a strong score. Nursing scores are primarily tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as good measures of the quality of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
