Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this ended up being a quality facility is that it received an impressive inspection rating. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In that area, we awarded it an A+. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This place received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility fared well in the category of long-term care. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which turns out to be one of our most favorable scores. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we concluded our assessment of the quantity of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 99.25187 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility does not take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of B-. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. There are numerous datapoints included in this category. Most of these datapoints reflect nurse staffing. This nursing home averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this place actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is usually an indicator that a facility has quality controls in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next area we rated is short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a D in the area of short-term care, leaving this as the facility's worst category. In determining our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final item we considered in this area is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.1 percent of its patients returning home. This was quite a bit below average.
