Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ in short-term care. Our short-term care ratings are vital for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients that returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in the country with 73.2 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received a virtually flawless government inspection. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. This was one of the few facilities to receive multiple A+'s. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this area tend to have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on our third area, this nursing home received an excellent long-term care score. In fact, we gave it a score of A in that area. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this facility provided vaccination data. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
In the final category we looked at, this facility was awarded an impressive grade grade of A in our nursing category. With this grade, the nursing home completed a straight A report card. Our nursing rating is primarily tied to the facility's nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 6 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the highest figures we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any facility in Pennsylvania in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these areas as good measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
