Facility Inspections

Grade: B

One of the reasons this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received a favorable inspection score. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B. Inspection grades are based on many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B. When calculating our nursing scores, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving patients more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This nursing home's next most favorable area ended up being long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to find that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Turning to the next category, this facility was given a C for short-term care, which is a decent rating. With our short-term care category, we seek to craft a sound gauge for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze a facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its level of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 4.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually quite a bit below average.
