Alpena, Michigan has just two nursing homes to choose from, which is a limited selection. This relatively small group of facilities were awarded on average an overall grade of B, which is a very solid score for the city. This is as good or better than the city grade of most of the cities in the United States. The best part of Alpena's strong report card was its nursing homes' inspection ratings. We discuss inspections in the next section
In addition to having quality nursing homes overall, this city's nursing homes really excelled in the category of inspections, where we gave it an A-. Not many cities fared this well in this category. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. The city performed spectacularly well in the category of short-term care as well. As a result, we awarded Alpena an A- in this area. Wrapping up its profile, this place received grades of B and D for our nursing and long-term care categories respectively. For the most part, we were impressed with this city's category scores, but it really struggled in the area of long-term care.
