On top of earning a great overall score, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. Our short-term care scores are thought to be more critical for residents in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Arizona in this area with 73.3 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Adding to this nursing home's impressive resume, we gave this nursing home an A for inspections. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. We looked at the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses spent with patients, in computing our rating in this category. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Historical

The final category we looked at was long-term care. We gave this nursing home a solid grade in that area, with a C. Even though this wasn't as dominant as several of its other grades, it is still a middle of the pack score. Our long-term care ratings are more meaningful for patients in need of more traditional assistance associated with activities of daily living. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Frankly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home gave the vaccine to just 71.6312 percent of its residents. Fortunately, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
