Nurse Quality
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but it really excelled in nursing care, with an impressive grade of A- in this category. Our nursing grade considers a host of factors. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as predictive indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a positive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded them a grade of B in that area, which is one of our better. For prospective residents seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are very important. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 71.884056 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is slightly less than we anticipated but still a decent figure. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.14 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed is short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B-. In computing these short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. It performed respectably with 45.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
The last category we assessed is inspections. We were surprised to find that this nursing home did not receive a favorable inspection grade. We gave it a just D in this category. Clearly, this grade is not on par with some of this facility's other category grades. Inspection grades relate to a facility's government inspections. Since this information is collected by independent inspectors, we weight it pretty heavily. Our inspection ratings factor in many items found on the nursing home's recent inspection reports. If you see severe deficiencies on the reports, this is generally the worst sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This facility was hit with 5 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we found is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they caused a risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received 2 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
