Although we did not rate this facility highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A- in this category. Our inspection ratings account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid nursing homes with a list of deficiencies flagged. This facility was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to resident health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

This nursing home's next best category is short-term care. We gave it a B- in this area. This is essentially a middle of the road score in this area. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place was respectable in this area with 48.8 percent of its residents returning home.

Unfortunately, this facility only received a grade of D for its nursing grade, which was actually one of its better category grades. The nursing grade analyzes quite a few factors, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home offered only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.

Historical

The next area we looked at was long-term care, which ended up being a low point for this nursing home. We awarded this facility a grade of just D in the area of long-term care. For residents seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is far less impressive than its vaccination record.
