Valley View Estates Health & Rehabilitation is one of only two available facilities located in Hamilton, Montana. Sporting an overall rating of B, this nursing home is a very good option. This place truly has plenty of good features. This place's impressive profile was highlighted by its inspection grade, which we will address in the next section.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To pair with its favorable overall performance, we awarded this facility a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This facility also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we gave it an above average grade of B in this area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. After considering the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 98.51852 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a deadly condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.7 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

In addition, this facility also received favorable short-term care grades this year. In fact, we gave it one of our more favorable scores in that category, with a grade of B. In the area of short-term care, we strive to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it was above average in this metric with 55.6 percent of its patients returning home.

The next category we assessed is nursing, which is this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave this nursing home a D in this category. Unfortunately, this category pulled down the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. Our nursing grade is largely associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This facility provided just 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Unfortunately, this nursing home also did not fare as well as we hoped in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed in this category.
