To pair with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. In determining our short-term care grades, we analyze a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This grade is more often than not a reliable measure of a facility's rehabilitation. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Connecticut in this area with 79.9 percent of its residents returning home.

Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. The nursing score is based on many datapoints. The most important variable is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This facility boasts a really impressive 7.6 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With below 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is typically an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a policy of turning residents more often.

The next area we looked at is long-term care. This facility performed well in our long-term care rating also. We gave them a dominant grade of A+ in this category. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to offering very impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Adding to its amazing profile, this facility has also earned near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. This made for a perfect report card for this nursing home. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
