In addition to earning a strong overall score, this facility performed well in our short-term care category. In fact, we awarded it an A+ for that category, which is one of our highest grades. Our short-term care scores are crucial for people looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a vast scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Maryland in this area with 69.7 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Among this facility's other strengths is its elite nursing grade. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of A-. Nursing grades are mostly tied to a facility's nurse staffing. This facility provides an incredible 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is far more care than what is provided by most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed as well as any facility Maryland in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

This nursing home earned a solid inspection report this year as well, with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a score of B-. We would argue that one of the most important factors in evaluating an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially focus on the severity of the deficiencies. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor dings are not something to panic about.

Turning to our fourth category, this nursing home was awarded a decent long-term care score of C. Long-term care grades are generally used to grade a nursing home's performance as a traditional nursing home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services provided by a skilled nursing facility. On top of above average nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination statistics are above average also. In fact, this facility vaccinated 99.27007 percent of its patients against pneumonia. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
