One of the reasons this proved to be a strong facility is that it earned a very impressive long-term care grade. This ended up being its best grade. In that area, we gave this facility an A. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. After looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 88.8 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is somewhat less than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. The last statistic we assessed is the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 1.95 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is middle of the road in this area.

In addition, this nursing home earned top notch health inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with a grade of B+. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. We weighed the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with patients, in determining our rating in this category. This facility provided 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The next category we rated was short-term care. This nursing home was given a C in this category. In our short-term care rating, we attempt to create a fair barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
