In addition to earning a strong overall rating, this facility performed even better in our inspections category which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our highest scores. Our inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area generally have few of these severe deficiencies. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Contributing to its profile, this facility also received a grade of B for its long-term care rating. This is an above average score in this area. For prospective patients seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 71.12971 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be slightly below what we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. The last datapoint we looked at was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 1.98 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is close to average in this area.

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B. Our nursing score looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with residents. This nursing home averages 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

The final area we rated was short-term care. We gave this nursing home a B- in that category. In determining our short-term care scores, we size up a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This category is considered to be a reliable assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. It fared much better in this area with 56.2 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
