While we were fairly low on this facility overall, we awarded it an A+ for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

Another one of this facility's more impressive category scores came in the area of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in long-term care it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 97.81931 percent of its patients, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This nursing home was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.36 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

This facility ended up receiving rock bottom score in our nursing category. It received an F in this category. The nursing rating analyzes quite a few subcategories, but the paramount consideration is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided just 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home had really bad marks in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. For starters, we looked at the percent of patients having falls leading to major injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite concerning in light of the fact that so many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing rating.

Moving on to the last area, this nursing home did not perform well in this area either. Due to an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. In determining these short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to devise a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. With a score of this caliber for this category, we were not surprised to learn that this facility was well below average in several staffing areas we looked at. It provided significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 18.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
