Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of really impressive nursing hour statistics, this nursing home's vaccination data was first-rate as well. In fact, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.58 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. It does not look like we were able to find deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Nursing ratings are heavily correlated with quality and quantity of nursing care. This facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a very impressive figure which typically leads to quality care. Finally, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is often an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by offering better nursing care and having a protocol of moving residents even once per day.
Short-term Care Quality
In the final area, this facility also was awarded an excellent short-term care rating, with a B+. This completed a very impressive profile. Short-term care ratings are critical for residents seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This facility provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is an encouraging sign. The final measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 41.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
