Facility Inspections
In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility performed well in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Very few places fared this well in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively insignificant. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an imminent threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home fared well in the area of long-term care. Indeed, we gave it a score of A for that area, which is one of our most impressive grades. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 98.38473 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. The last statistic we looked at is its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 3.58 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this category, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes based on the medical complexity of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a middle of the road score in the category of short-term care, where it received a grade of B-. In calculating our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the nation with 53 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
The last area we graded is nursing. This facility was awarded a very good nursing score this year, with a C. Although this was not quite as strong as several of its other grades, this is still an acceptable grade in that area. In computing our nursing scores, we factor in both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused measures. We especially look at the percent of patients who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. These metrics are measures of the quality of nursing care, since superior care can reduce these issues.
