Facility Inspections
On top of receiving a great overall score, this nursing home also earned top notch inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our best grades in this category, with an A. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility performed well in our long-term care category. As a result, we gave it a score of A for that area, which happens to be one of our best grades. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of offering very impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This percentage is also significantly better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.91 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. The nursing rating is based on quite a few subcategories, but the primary one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was among the better totals we found. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home in the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we rated is short-term care, in which this facility was given a C. Even though this turned out to be its weakest category grade, this is nevertheless not a major area of concern. With our short-term care rating, we endeavor to create a sound gauge for rehabilitation. In this process, we analyze the nursing home's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final item we looked at in this category is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 28.3 percent of this facility's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
