While we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite insignificant. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

This nursing home's next most favorable category was long-term care, but even there it earned just a D in that category. This turns out to be a well below average grade. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. We were pleased to discover that this nursing home vaccinates 97.881355 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this nursing home also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.

Another unfortunate development is the F this facility received in the area of short-term care. In forming our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Considering its weak rating in this area, we were not stunned to discover that this facility provided significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that just 46.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

The final category we looked at was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category, which is a poor score. Our nursing category is based on quite a few data points, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home averaged just 3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is far below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these metrics hurt this facility's nursing grade significantly.
