Facility Inspections
This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded it an impressive grade of A in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite insignificant. This nursing home was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent risk to resident safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a score of A- for our short-term care score. With our short-term care category, we endeavor to create a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation. In doing so, we assess a nursing home's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it fared better than most facilities in this area with 52.2 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
This facility really excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. There are a host of datapoints within this area. Most of these datapoints relate to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Roughly one-fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours more in calculating our nursing grades. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we graded is long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home an impressive grade of B. When facilities receive this type of score in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the aged 65 and up population. The last statistic we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.41 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
