In addition to receiving a strong overall grade, this nursing home performed well in our short-term care category. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Our short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in South Carolina in this area with 66.3 percent of its residents returning home.

Contributing to this facility's list of accomplishments, it also was given a superb long-term care score. We awarded them an elite strong of A- in this area. For patients in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 84.375 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be a bit lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. This place was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.56 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it excelled in the area of inspections, with a B in that category. It outperformed most nursing homes in this area. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Switching gears to our final category, this nursing home received an acceptable nursing score of B-. Nursing grades are mostly associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these data points as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
