Facility Inspections
In addition to being a strong nursing home overall, this place also excelled in our inspections category, where it received a grade of A+. Not many facilities fared better in this area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home is also strong in the category of long-term care, where it was given a score of B+. It performed better than most nursing homes in this area. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.22 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility was awarded its next most favorable category score in the category of short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of B- in this area, which is an acceptable score. In computing our short-term care scores, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is often a solid measure of the facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we looked at is nursing. In this category, we awarded this facility a C. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses are caring for patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This place provides only 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a somewhat alarming figure as it is well below the national average. Finally, our nursing ratings also consider some quality-focused metrics. We especially look at the percent of patients who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. These statistics are measures of the quality of nursing care, since superior care tends to reduce these issues.
